History of Baton Rouge High School
Founded in 1880, Baton Rouge High School was the first public high school in East Baton Rouge Parish. Mr. T. Sambola Jones was the first teacher, principal and the first superintendent of schools in the parish. The school changed locations several times starting at 200 St. Louis Street then to 900 Convention Street, to 1100 Florida Street before finding its present 19.5 acre location in 1927 at 2825 Government Street. Additional buildings were added and renovations made during the 1950s.
In the fall of 1976, BRHS began operating under the new magnet school curriculum, which emphasizes academics and the performing arts. In 1986, BRHS’s iconic building was placed on the National Register of Historic Places. In May of 2010, the Government Street campus underwent a two year renovation and restoration. Students were relocated during the renovation and returned to Government Street in August of 2012.
The mission of Baton Rouge High School is to provide a college preparatory curriculum that will enable students to be lifelong learners, critical thinkers, and ethical citizens who can function in an increasingly technical, diverse and global environment. Alma Mater
For Baton Rouge High we raise our cry, for the school we all adore
We will raise our standards high, til known from shore to shore
Then we’ll fight, fight, fight with all our might, til victory’s in sight
We’ll raise our banners high for dear ol’ Baton Rouge High
Fight Song
See those gallant Bulldogs, each one brave and true
Keep on fighting bulldogs, we are all for you... RAH RAH RAH!
Go on down that field, boys, break right through that line
Keep on fighting Bulldogs, we’ll win all the time!
