Faculty Alum Friday: Emily Defoe, Class of 1999

BRHSF: How long have you work at Baton Rouge High School?

ED: 1 year. This is my 2nd year.

BRHSF: Why did you choose to work at BRHS?

ED: I chose to work at Baton Rouge High School so that I could continue the exceptional and long-standing choral music legacy that shaped so much of my future as a student.

BRHSF: How did BRHS prepare you for college and/or your career?

ED: It was in choir class my junior year that I decided my life’s work was to become a choir teacher.  The knowledge I gained through the choral program and all of my classes made college a breeze, and oriented me toward a career that I am passionate about.

BRHSF: What activities were you involved in as a student at BRHS?

ED: I was in choir (Choralaires, Festival Singers, Festival Ringers)!  I was also the lead in two musicals put on by the choir – “West Side Story” and “Anything Goes.”

BRHSF: What teachers or staff influenced you as a student at BRHS and how?

ED: Robbie Giroir’s choir classes greatly influenced my decision to become a choir teacher.  I am proud to be continuing his legacy.

BRHSF: What is a fun fact, embarrassing moment, or funny story about yourself from high school or now?

ED: Fashion today has students wearing trends from the ’90’s.  Well, when I was in high school in 1999, I wore my mom’s clothes from the ’70’s to school every day–bell bottoms, big collars, jumpsuits, you name it!

BRHSF:  What advice would you give current students?

ED: Work hard and do your absolute best, but be kind to yourself in the process.
