Brief History of Baton Rouge High School
Baton Rouge High School opened its doors in 1880 as the only public high school for East Baton Rouge Parish. In 1927, the campus moved to the current location on Government Street as Baton Rouge High School. BRHS was designated as an Arts and Academic Magnet School in 1976.
In 1986, Baton Rouge High’s iconic original building was placed on the National Register of Historic Places.
In 2009, the East Baton Rouge Parish School Board approved a $52,000,000 plan for the complete renovation and expansion of the Government Street campus. With the campus construction and renovations complete, the new architectural design preserves the emblematic iconic facade of the original building and the majestic live oaks of the campus grounds.
